August 22, 2024
The fly fishing this August on the Missouri has proved to be incredibly consistent and full of wonderful wildlife sightings! Daily highs will vary this week (69°-91°F) and the evenings are beginning to feel more like fall. Flows are at 4,500 CFS with water temperatures coming out of the dam at 63°F. Keep in mind that dam release temperatures will spike to 65°F, which means water temps on the lower river will be around 70°F. Fish early and handle trout quickly.
Dry fly fishing continues to provide pockets of opportunity. Caddis and tricos have taken warier fish, while hoppers and ants continue to pick off opportunistic trout.
Nymphing continues to be very strong. In fact, this may be one of the most consistent August's in recent memory. The river is fishing well and the mid-to-lower stretches (Craig-Pelican) have been producing great fish. Zirdles, rainbow warriors, zebra midges and sow bugs are all getting it done.
Streamer fishing is clawing its way back into focus. Still not a hot option, but there are a few anglers getting it done. The classic thin mint continues to produce the most fish for our anglers.
Drop us a line, and we'll see you soon at the ranch!
