While anglers take advantage of a year round fishery on the Missouri, there's a special allure to May that keeps even the most experienced fly fisherman coming back. As a tailwater, the Missouri River is insulated from large runoff events. The spring fishing on the Mo is some of the best in all of Montana, with trout heavily feeding as water temps come up. Weather can vary greatly, but historic day-time highs are in the 60's with scattered showers.Â
BWOs continue to reign supreme with Caddis appearing as well. Our hatches depend greatly on the river temps, but this time of year can create some large pods of rising fish. We find that lower profile, CDC flies are always a great way to fool picky Missouri River trout.
May might be the most prolific nymph bite on the river. Perdigon style BWO nymphs, weight flies, sowbugs and worms are all on the menu. Whether running deep or short leashing during the hatch, anglers are sure to find consistent success.
Streamer fishing is solid and a great option for overcast days. As the water temps increase out of the winter zone, our trout become more aggressive and take streamers readily. Whether fishing a sink tip or long leader, try throwing smaller bugger style patterns for the most success.Â
