Missouri River Perfection in May

February 8, 2024

There's no denying that May holds a special place in the hearts of locals here on the Missouri River. Anglers flock from far and wide to experience the magic of fly fishing the Missouri River in May.

While other rivers battle runoff, the Missouri River remains a safe haven of clear waters and ideal flows, thanks to the stability provided by numerous dams. With temperatures ranging from 50°F to 75°F, trout are actively feeding, offering anglers consistent action. May on the Missouri is renowned for yielding large, powerful fish, making it a must-visit destination for any angler seeking the catch of a lifetime.

May presents the start of ideal dry fly angling. Blue Wing Olive hatches can occur, firing up our trout. Anchoring up on rising fish becomes the preferred approach, with opportunities to target larger trout. Additionally, occasional caddis and drakes offer a varied presentation to pickier targets.

Nymphing and streamer fishing remain excellent options in May. It's not uncommon to see anglers doubling up with trout throughout the day!

May at the Missouri River Ranch offers opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, kick off BBQ season, and unwind with cocktails by the fire. We invite you to join us and experience the best of spring fly fishing in Montana!
