May is upon us and the last few days of April provided excellent BWO hatches! When clouds roll in, the surface of the Missouri comes alive with our favorite mayfly. Rising fish are being found river wide in slower pockets of water. May is building up to be a great month as the river is reaching ideal temperatures and bug activity is increasing. Missouri River Flows are 4,100 CFS and water temps are 46°F.
Afternoon to early evenings are prime BWO hatching windows. Anglers are finding great success with Adams Parachutes, Rusty Spinners and Cripples. Bright sun and higher ambient temperatures can slow down surface activity, but focusing on cloudier/cold portions of the day have yielded great fish. Good luck out there as you head hunt!
Nymphing will continue to build as baetis nymphs are putting our trout on a steady diet. Large eddies are concentrating bug life as well as feeding trout. Running nymphs shallow through these waters will elicit quick takes.
Streamer fishing continues to produce during overcast portions of the day. Try matching your colors to the ambient conditions (darker pattern on darker days, brighter patterns when the sun is peaking through).
