As the river cools and trees begin to change color along the Missouri, we are reminded why this is the best fly fishing river in Montana! Trout are becoming increasingly grabby while our wildlife is on the move (Elk, black bears, mule deer coyotes and eagles are all making a showing on our river banks). Ask our staff for the best places to view the incredible wildlife of Montana. Flows are at 4,340 CFS with water temperatures coming out of the dam at 60.8°F. Daytime highs will vary between 67°F-80°F over the next week.
Dry fly fishing is producing some quality fish with varying pockets of activity. Pseudos, Callibaetis, Caddis & October Caddis have all fooled infamous Missouri River rising fish.
Nymphing is the hot bite! Be mindful to try different patterns if you hit a lull. Some anglers are still reporting success on the Zirdle, while most are fishing weight flies, midges, perdigons and blowtorches. As the river cools down, our trout will begin to stage in softer water. This is also a great time of year to fish a thin mint under an indicator!
Streamer fishing is the way to go for anglers who are confident with their casting. While some weeds are still present, fast retrieves are producing incredible strikes.
Drop us a line, and we'll see you soon at the ranch!
