The end of August produced some incredible fly fishing action for our anglers. Cooler temperatures opened the door to streamer fishing and longer windows of action! With dozens of anglers going out each day from the Missouri River Ranch, reports of great fly fishing were all around. Flows are at 4,800 CFS with water temperatures coming out of the dam at 62°F. We have a few more days of warm weather on the horizon, but fall is definitely in the air.
Dry fly fishing has begun to taper off (which is the norm for September!). Are there still hatches? Absolutely! Callibaetis have sporadically popped up, pseudos are around and caddis are still making their presence known. Hoppers have also been taking fish. Anglers have opportunities to dry fly fish, but should not expect to have non-stop action.
Nymphing is very strong for this time of year. Zirdles, perdigons, wire worms and sow bugs have all been taking fish. Trout will begin to stage in various water types this time of year, so vary your approach!
Streamer fishing continues to mount. Most anglers are getting it done on sink tips and smaller patterns. Bright, flashy patterns also seem to be getting it done. Just watch out for those weeds!
Drop us a line, and we'll see you soon at the ranch!
