Ospreys are back to the Ranch and so is the Spring Weather!

The ospreys are back on property and so is a stretch of consistent Spring weather. With stabilizing daytime temperatures in the low 70's and nighttime temps staying above freezing, this will help bring more consistency to the river in the coming week. Flows remain in the 3000-3500CFS range with water temperatures bumping up to the upper 40's. This trend will be as welcoming to the aquatic life as our anglers.
Rising fish have become a staple at the Ranch over the last week. While anglers can expect to see more bug activity on an overcast day, crafty guides are still putting clients on rising fish even on the sunniest portions of the day. A prolific hatch is becoming an evening occurrence at "The Beach" stretch of MRR. Anglers looking to get a little more action in after dinner can expect to entice fish with a Purple Para Wulff or Griffith's Gnat as a point fly with an emerger or spinner pattern, like a Rusty Spinner or CDC Emerger, following a short distance behind. Sizing down seems to be the ticket for finicky eaters.
Finding the right depth has been the key to successful nymphing on the Mo. Fish are starting to explore different depths depending on the day, so hot flies that have turned cold from the previous day may just need to be lowered or raised a foot or two in the water column to get back on the fish. Sow bugs are always a safe bet with Stocker's Two Hot being a fishy favorite this week. With trout starting to hold in shallower, quicker water, use a larger Skwala pattern as an indicator fly to suspend a Spanish Bullet or olive perdigon and pick off hungry trout on the edges of runs.
While not producing the numbers of fish as a nymph rig, when you do pin one on a streamer...hang on! If quality over quantity is your game, keep chunking dark, meaty flies for the predatory browns. Can't go wrong with a Mini-Dungeon or Sculpin pattern this time of year.

Drop us a line, and we'll see you soon at the ranch! This is sure to be an unbelievable season on the Missouri.
