October Action on the Missouri

October is the best month to experience Montana as it was meant to be. Wildlife is on the move: from bugling elk, to coveys of wild birds and large, aggressive brown trout...the Missouri River valley comes alive with the colors of fall and the wild beauty of our region.

Caddis, October Caddis, Callibaetis and Pseudos will be the main game for October. If cooler weather rapidly approaches, we'll have epic BWO hatches. Dry fly anglers will stay busy with smaller patterns taking great fish in certain pockets.

Nymphing is red hot and short leashing can provide great action up against the banks and on shallower runs. On warmer/sunnier days, nymphing is the ticket to an incredible day of fishing on the Missouri.

Streamer fishing peaks, with non-stop action on overcast days. Rainbow trout feed heavily in anticipation of winter, while pre-spawn brown trout aggressively search-and-destroy your patterns. This is also a great time of year to break out the spey rod and try your hand at swinging for iconic Missouri River trout.

Drop us a line, and we'll see you soon at the ranch!
