We are halfway through August, which means less drift boats on the Mo and opportunities to fish hoppers and zirdles! The fishing this summer has been streaky. Tough conditions (water levels, temps, traffic, etc.) have kept anglers focused, with a few great days thrown in the mix. Upcoming daily highs will range from 86°F-91°F. As of this report, flows are 3,600 CFS with water temperatures out of the dam at 64°F.
Terrestrials are still the name of the game! A few anglers are still getting it done with tricos, but those fish have become very selective and the weeds make fishing small flies tough. Most are focusing on hoppers, ants and beetles. This is the time of year where your approach, and quality fish, will trump quantity.
Zirdles, weight flies and rainbow warriors are all taking fish. Most anglers are setting their depth, with a larger zirdle followed by a smaller bug. Don't be afraid to drag the zirdle around and give it some action!
Streamers are taking a brief siesta, but we anticipate them being back on the menu in mid-September!
