Dry fly fishing buffet!

June 29, 2022

Fly Fishing Update: Our guests, guides and friends at MFO have been busy catching some beautiful fish! The River has stabilized from ~9,000 CFS to a consistent range of ~3,900-4,200 CFS. Water temps are in the mid-to-high 50's. Trout are happy and looking up. The town of Craig agrees that this has been some of the best dry fly fishing in the past 20 years! PMDs continue to be strong throughout the day, with concentrated spinner action in the evening. Anglers are able to hunt for heads, and target specific fish in their feeding lanes. Blind casting caddis patterns has produced quality fish. The past 72 hours has seen thick caddis hatches, with large bugs becoming the main attraction at dusk. Anglers have also reported seeing good action on hoppers, as well as the errant Golden Stone. Nymphing continues to support wonderful afternoons of fishing. As water temperatures slowly rise throughout the summer, anglers will begin to add midge patterns to their arsenal- in addition to the usual suspects of sow bugs, scuds, frenchies and perdigons. Streamer fishing reports have dwindled, as the majority of anglers are choosing to target fish on the surface. But don't be afraid to swing some smaller olive wooly buggers over mid river buckets! Drop us a line and we hope to see you soon!
